In the Tech Reclaimers Signal discussion, a participant mentioned that, rather than using a standard carrier like Verizon or T-Mobile for their mobile service, they use three different providers:
- Data-only Subscription. They use JMP Data-only SIMs and eSIMs, which offers data-only service in Canada and US. JMP's software is open source, and they also offer phone numbers in Canada and US through a different plan. JMP also has informal partners that offer services outside Canada and US.
- Phone Number. They use a VOIP.MS virtual phone number. The company offers phone numbers in 100+ countries.
- VoIP app. They mentioned Linphone, which is FOSS and works on Android, iOS, Linux, MacOS, and Windows.
This seems like it costs less than most standard mobile service. It also seems to offer greater privacy, and it doesn't seem much more complex to set up than other mobile services.
Would you recommend any substitutions for JMP, VOIP.MS, or Linphone?
Have you run into any issues using these or similar services and how did you address them?
