Why RSS:

RSS is a web feed allowing you to create a custom feed of your own choosing vs what big tech wants you want to see. This allows you to aggregate many websites to the same place for easy viewing.

How to find RSS feeds

Every website will link to there own feeds differently some sites have the link next to the rest of the socials and some don't that's out of scope for this guide but this link will get you started https://www.wprssaggregator.com/how-to-find-rss-feed-url/.

Options:

There endless options for RSS applications from fully hosted web apps to self hosted webapps to thick apps that install directly on your computer, this guide will go over a good fully hosted option and a self hosted option as picking an app for 1 platform may not work for everyone.

Option 1 - Web Hosted Feedly)

This is one of the fully hosted option you make an account and start adding RSS feeds. This will be one of the fastest ways to get started.

Option 2 - Self Hosted Freshrss

This is a very popular self hosted option for running your own website that enables you to controll the entire tech "stack" on your own hardware.

I've been trying out miniflux and I'm kind of mixed on it. If you do try to set it up, make sure you setup the database first, otherwise you'll be confused.

I've also had problems getting it to read some feeds that work fine elsewhere, such as GCC's RSS feed for commits. Or there have been some feeds I've had to customize the User-Agent in order to fetch.

I looked at Freshrss but it uses LLM stuff and, well, that's not for me.

If you use Nextcloud for filesharing and other things, the Nextcloud News app is excellent. That has been my daily driver, both on the web and in the Android app. Several other RSS readers support Nextcloud News.
